For the midterm exam, which you should take by the end of
week five of your enrollment in the course, you should read the
Findley/Rothney textbook chapters 10-18. You may also
decide to read some of the earlier chapters in the book. Take a moment and read some of my notes on Decolonization and the Human Rights
The midterm exam will
consist of three parts: map quiz
(50 points), chronology (50 points) and essay (100 points).
For the Map quiz, you already have a
copy of the blank
map and a list of items to be located on the
map. On the exam, you will receive another blank map and be asked
to locate twenty-five items.
For the Chronology, you will list
(in chronological order) fifteen (15) significant world events,
that you choose, since 1945. Identify and explain the importance of each.

The Essay, approximately two-three pages in length, that you will write in the testing
lab is as follows:
Summarize and characterize the changing political
environment in the world since 1945.
Please take the time to organize your thoughts in a logical
manner and cite evidence to support your analysis.
You may choose to listen to some short remarks by your instructor about the midterm exam
as a mp3
file. You can also read the instructions as
a txt file.
You may wish to
participate in the Blackboard online
discussion of the midterm essay assignment before you take the exam.
Directions for Taking the Midterm Exam
Please review the the general
ELI rules and
regulations for examinations. The following is a
summary:

Prepare for the exam;

Check the closest testing center for its
hours;

Take a photo ID and your
Exam Pass (printed from this website) to the
Testing Lab;

Take (and pass) the exam. Allow yourself
at least ninety minutes.
If you live outside metropolitan Washington or are
incarcerated or handicapped, see the information in the general ELI Policies
and Procedures for

proctors.
Please do not let fear of the exams stop you from
completing the course. If you have great difficulty getting to a Testing
Lab or are concerned about taking exams, please contact your instructor.
There is no specific time limit, but allow at least 90
minutes to complete the exam.

TAKE THIS EXAM.
NOTE that midterm exams will not be
returned to students. Your exam grade and instructor comments will be sent
by e-mail to you. Please be sure to write your email address
on the cover sheet of your exam.
