 Reading Purpose:

The chapter describes the costs and benefits of distributing computer resources. It describes the specific methods of resource sharing for I/O devices, mass storage (files), and processing (CPUs). The structure and organization of network software and hardware and common physical attributes of networks, including topology, access protocol, and communication hardware are also described.
