Assembling the Portfolio
The various sections of the portfolio should be assembled in the following order:
  1. The Cover Letter which states your name, major, credit request and synopsis of experience;
  2. your Life History paper which highlights the important transition stages of your life;
  3. a year-by-year Chronological Record of your experiences since leaving high school, through the present time;
  4. your Goals Paper describing your personal, career and educational goals;
  5. Northern Virginia Community College Course Content Summary
  6. the Narrative of Competency (in three column form) which provides concise statements of your experience and learning related to particular competencies; and
  7. your Documentation of the learning experiences described in the narratives, separated alphabetical or numerical dividers.
Label the outside of the portfolio to include:
  • NAME
  • DATE
  • MAJOR
  • COURSE CHALLENGED
  • FACILITATOR
Be sure to keep copies, either on disk or hard copy, of each portfolio submitted. Submit copies of documentation, not originals. When writing your Life History, Chronological Record, Goals Paper and Narrative of Competencies on the computer, be sure to back everything up on a separate disk.

Note: You may have your portfolio(s) back after the evaluation process is completed. We do ask that you keep a copy of your work for one year in case it is needed for review by any external agencies such as the Virginia State Board of Education, the Virginia Community College System, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges, the Association of Virginia Colleges, the Veteran's Administration or the U. S. Office of Education.
