| When
your portfolio(s) is completed and assembled, it is ready to be reviewed
by an instructor assigned for this purpose. You will be instructed by mail
to register for the section of the course(s) and you will be required to
pay tuition for the course(s). It is not necessary for you to attend any
session of the course(s); you have already done the work.
At the end of the semester
in which the portfolio(s) is evaluated a grade of "P" will be awarded for
a successful portfolio(s). If the portfolio(s) is not approved for the
awarding of credit, a "W" will be assigned.
The faculty evaluators will
contract you by mail or by phone to arrange a meeting with you on campus
if they deem it necessary. In most instances the portfolio is reviewed
and approved with no contact between the evaluator and the student.
If a personal meeting with
the faculty evaluator becomes necessary, you may be asked to verbally answer
questions about your learning. If the faculty evaluator feels that testing
is required, you will receive advance notice. The faculty may also ask
for a demonstration of your skills (especially in areas such as speech,
dance, music, computer programming, etc.). However, this happens only if
the portfolio is weak in certain areas, not as a rule.
The portfolio(s) will be
evaluated during the semester following the taking of the STD 298, PLACE
Workshop class. You will know the results of this evaluation by the end
of the subsequent semester, if not sooner.
The results of the evaluation
yield three possibilities:
Possibility 1: You have a
good understanding of the course challenged and can apply it at a satisfactory
level of competence: therefore, credit is awarded.
Possibility 2: The faculty
evaluator may feel that you have valuable learning related to his/her course,
but there are some important gaps in your learning.
Possibility 3: Credit is
denied. The following page is a copy of the faculty PLACE grading guidelines
and evaluation form that is included with each portfolio.
FACULTY EVALUATION FORM
Remember that the faculty
evaluator has a responsibility to his/her discipline and to the students
who have learned the course material through class attendance. You may
receive credit only if there is documented proof that the required learning
has taken place. If the learning falls short in any way, the faculty evaluator
may deny credit or require some additional academic work to fulfill the
course requirements. |
