Course Revision Tutorial Script Slide 1: The first step in the Course Revision of a distance course is filling out the Course Revision form. The form can be found at the url, http://eli.nvcc.edu/doc/ekirevform04.doc or by clicking on the link below.
Slide 2: One piece of important information for the form involves looking at your students’ success—the number who successfully completed the course and the number of students who never started the course. This information comes from the online logs.
Slide 3: Another piece of information for the form comes from the student evaluations. Look for any questions where students repeatedly respond using disagree or strongly disagree. Also review the comments for frequently mentioned likes and dislikes. Both provide a good picture of what is and what isn’t working.
Slide 4: View the video on the next slide. Then, if you have any questions about filling out the form, contact an Instructional Designer at the Extended Learning Institute.
Slide 5: After filling in the general information on the course revision form, you will find the table where you fill in a specific semester’s data.
To find this data you need to open the online logs, choose the course, and go to Reports and Graphs.
Scroll down to Grade Distribution, click on the semester, and click on your course.
The easiest way to handle the data is to open both the revision form and the online logs side by side. When they are both open you can go to the status bar at the bottom, right click in the grey area, and choose tile vertically.
The first piece of information we need to add is the semester.
Then the enrollment, which you can see at the top.
The first number we are looking for is the Overall success for all students, which equates to the first graph or 50%
The second number is the Overall Success rate minus non-starters, which equates to the second graph or 72%
If you scroll to the bottom you can see the entire grade distribution: As, Bs, C, D, Fs, Is, Drops, W+, Wo, and Active students. Attitition for those who sent in 1 assignment is the W+ rate, 11%
And, the Non-start rate is the Wo rate, or 23%.
For other semesters, repeat this process.
The rest of the data that you need to gather comes from the end-of-course evaluations. In the online logs, next to your course listing, you’ll see the course evaluation results link.
The link will take you to the directions for accessing the results via surveyor.
When you open Surveyor, click on Surveys in the upper left corner.
Click on the name of your division. And then, the course of interest.
Scroll down t the Reports section and click on Summary Report.
You will see the combined student responses for all of the questions on the survey. You are asked to report those that have an average score of 2 and above. The average number is here. If the number is above a 2, it indicates a question where students chose Disagree or Strongly Disagree more times than Agree or Strongly Agree. These questions may indicate an area that needs some attention.
Again, the best way to handle this is to tile the windows so that you can move the data to the revision form.
For most frequently mentioned likes and dislikes, go back to the reports listing and choose the Comment Report.
Read through these comments and find the reoccurring likes and dislikes. You can highlight a comment, copy it and paste it on the revision form.
When you have finished reporting the data, you can move on to the rest of the form where you will describe your plans for revision.
