NOVA Online courses have a requirement for proctored assessments to maintain compliance with our accreditation standards and the Higher Education Act’s identity verification requirements for online courses. College-wide, proctored assessments prove identity so students must show overall passing levels on the proctored assessments in order to pass an online course. In this online course, the average of both proctored assessment scores must be a passing percentage of 80% in order for you to pass the course regardless of your scores on other graded activities. Please contact your instructor if you require any clarification on this proctored assessment policy.

R - Re-enroll Student is making satisfactory progress toward meeting the course requirements but needs more time to complete them. Student must register for and complete ENF 2.

U - Fail Student's work is unacceptable or incomplete. Student stopped attending class and/or did not submit all required assignments.  Student must take ENF 2 again.

Evaluation of Writing Assignments – Writing evaluation is subjective. In order to demystify this evaluation process, your instructor will use rubrics to evaluate your summaries, responses, blogs, and formal essays.  You are expected to revise your written work until your instructor is satisfied with your writing.

Please note:  Because the assignments in this course build upon each other, it is important that you complete each assignment successfully.  For your reading, vocabulary and grammar quizzes, success is defined as 80% mastery.  For your essays, your instructor will determine when your essays demonstrate mastery according to the essay rubric.  Therefore, although points will be attached to each graded item, there are NO optional assignments.

Additional Policies Regarding Grades

Attendance

In Canvas, instructors can evaluate a student’s attendance by login and activity within the course, as well as by the assignments the student has submitted. Therefore, attendance in an online class is measured by logins AND completion of required assignments. You will be much more successful in this course in you complete the assignments by their due dates.

Assignment submission

You are expected to complete all work by its due date.  Please contact your instructor in advance if you will have difficulty meeting a due date.  Although your instructor might accept a late assignment, you will lose points for lateness.  Also, late work could impede your progress in this class.  If you have not successfully completed all the work by the end of the semester, you will receive an "R" and be required to re-enroll in the course.

MLA Format

Most college English instructors insist on MLA format for formal assignments. In this course, all formal essays (the Career Awareness essay, the Thematic essay, and the Reflective essay) must follow MLA formatting standards. These include:

Communication

You are responsible for checking Canvas regularly, regarding announcements and your college student email account several times a week in order to stay informed about class assignments and important college announcements.  Although your instructor will identify his/her preferred method of communication, NOVA Online instructors generally prefer that you contact them through Canvas Inbox or via email.

Grading turnaround time I will endeavor to grade your submissions within a week.  If I have not done so, please email me and let me know which of your work still needs grading.

Honor Policy

Academic dishonesty is unacceptable. Any act of academic dishonesty could result in a failing grade for the course. Academic dishonesty is defined as representing the work, ideas, and/or words of others as your own in any format or providing your work to others.  We will be using systems to verify the originality of all written assignments.  The first time your report shows a problem with plagiarism, you will be required to rewrite your assignment.  Any subsequent problem with plagiarism will result in a zero on the assignment and possible failure of the course.  Do your own work!

Feedback

You will receive individual feedback on your writing. Sometimes you may have to rewrite the whole piece - depending on the quality of your work. Remember, the goals of this course include reading strategies and clear writing ability. You need to be able to take in information, reflect on that information, and express your conclusions and inferences clearly. Thus, you must develop strategies for clear writing.
