This course provides a general introduction to American corrections, including theories of punishment, social systems within correctional institutions, correctional history, contemporary prison issues and community corrections. It focuses on societal responses to the offender and traces the evolution of practices based on philosophies of retribution, deterrence and rehabilitation.

Prerequisite:

Although there are no class prerequisites for this course, it is highly recommended that you be enrolled in the Administration of Justice program. This course is also useful if you are a Sociology major. You also need to have access to a computer and the internet.
