This course is the first segment of a two part (ADJ 211 and 212) series. This first part introduces you to the essentials of criminal law and the most significant legal issues in today's American criminal justice system. You will learn the legal definitions of crimes and criminals, as well as the complex ways in which police, courts, and corrections work together to apply the criminal law.. Teaches the elements of proof for major and common law crimes and the legal classification of offenses. Studies the kinds, degrees and admissibility of evidence and its presentation in criminal proceedings with emphasis on legal guidelines for methods and techniques of evidence acquisition. Surveys the procedural requirements from arrest to final disposition in the various American court systems with focus on the Virginia jurisdiction. Lecture 3 hours per week.
