Course Grades
Your course grade will be determined according to the following percentages.
- Discussion Boards (10% of final grade): Discussion Boards have two areas: Literacy Topics and Book Summaries. These two areas will require you to write on a topic and to engage in conversation with your classmates. Discussion board postings should be between two and three paragraphs in length and address all components required. Responses should be a paragraph, as opposed to a sentence. Responding with “I like that book also” or “I agree” does not reflect that students are engaging in the conversation. You will receive feedback on your discussion board postings in the first week with the opportunity to redo them in the first week. After this discussion boards cannot be redone or completed late.
- Exam 1 (15%): Students will complete a midterm exam covering material from the first half of the course.
- Exam 2 (15%): Students will complete a final exam covering material from the second half of the course.
- Lesson Plan (20% of final grade): Students will create a lesson plan that includes multiple components and focuses on oral literacy (language arts in the preschool years).
- Babies First Words video Observation (15% of final grade): Students will observe an episode of the Netflix Series “Babies” and complete posted assignment. An alternative assignment is also posted for students who cannot view Babies on Netflix.
- Weekly Response Assignments (10%): Students will complete weekly assignments by responding to prompts related to weekly assignments.
- Lab Assignments (15%) Students will complete several assignments designed to meet lab requirements. These assignments will comprise the grade for students.

Grading Scale
NOVA Online proctored or major assessments are required to maintain compliance with our accreditation standards and the Higher Education Act’s identity verification requirements for online courses. College-wide, proctored or major assessments must prove identity. To accomplish this in online courses, students must show overall passing levels on the proctored or major assessments in order to pass the course.
In this online course, if your average score on all proctored or major assessments is a passing percentage of 60 percent or higher, then your grade will be calculated according to the scale in the table below. Otherwise, a final grade of F will be assigned.
Your final grade will be based on the following scale.
