Course Description:
Provides experiences in content, methods, and materials for the development of math, science, and
social studies skills in children. Emphasis will be on developing strategies for using various resources
to facilitate children’s construction of knowledge.
General Course Purpose
To develop the student's skills in preparing, presenting, and evaluating preschool activities in the
areas of developing math, science and social studies concepts. The course is designed for educators
teaching children in the early childhood age range.
Prerequisite:
There are no formal prerequisites for this course. You should have the basic college prerequisites of functional literacy in the English language and reading at the 12th grade level.
Many students are concerned that they need a background in Math or Science before they begin. An appreciation of math as a way of learning and thinking (or at least an open mind) will help you understand not only what children learn, but how they learn. That is because most learning for
children involves basic math concepts such as sorting and patterns and classification which they learn through the exploration of the environment.
