CHD 165 Observation and Participation

 Course Objectives: At the completion of the course students will be able to:  NAEYC Standards for Professional Preparation
 a) Identify the principles and major developmental milestones of children based on the domains of physical/motor, emotional/social and cognitive/linguistic development.  1a
 b) Apply various observational methods and techniques, including both formal and informal to look at cognitive/linguistic, physical/motor, and emotional/social development.  3b
 c) Identify and practice professional ethics and confidentiality when working with children and families.  3c
 d) Explain the reasons for and value of conducting ongoing observations of children and programs.  3a
 e) Articulate how one’s own biases can effect observations  6b
 f) Critique various sources of assessment data  3c
 g) Produce written observations that are factual and descriptive rather than interpretive and judgmental  6c
 h) Articulate the relationships among child/programs observations, child/program assessments, and planning for services.  1d
 i) Explain the importance of cultural aspects and parental input in children’s assessments  1d,2c,3d
 j) Analyze and describe how observation and assessment are connected to understanding behavior and situations  3a,3b
 k) Identify procedures for documenting suspected child abuse.  3a,3b
 l) Explain ways to assemble children’s portfolios and its use in conferencing with families 3b 
 m) Identify and apply appropriate learning standards as they relate to early childhood education.  6b,6d
