Please note that you are required to follow either MLA or APA formatting to cite your sources for all your assignments.

Discussion Activities

Within the course you will be responsible for applying concepts from the chapter readings to different communication situations. For each discussion board activity please make sure to use terms from the reading in your post to demonstrate your comprehension of course material. In addition, please double-check your post for spelling, punctuation and grammar. Each discussion board activity requires you to reflect on different aspects of communication and write a substantive response. You will also receive points for replying to posts submitted by your fellow classmates.

This Is Me Speech 

The This Is Me Speech provides you with the first public speaking experience in the course. The purpose of this 2-3 minute speech is to tell the audience 2-3 interesting things about your interests in an organized manner. Please be sure to begin your speech with a clear introduction that has an attention getting device and a preview statement of the three interesting things you will explain. In addition, your speech should have a Body section where you discuss the three interesting things about yourself in more detail. Finally, your speech should have a conclusion with a clear closing statement. Your speech will also be evaluated based on delivery components such as practicing good eye contact, using a relaxed rate, and other vocal delivery aspects.

This assignment will be used to verify your identity for all of the speech assignments in this course.

Self-Check Quizzes

The self-check quizzes are optional and scored automatically. You will not be graded on any of the self-check quizzes in the course, but they will help you prepare for the proctored assessments.

Interpersonal Communication Film Paper

In this paper, you will examine several central theories of interpersonal communication and apply them to a film of your choice. The focus will be on how communication is used to initiate, maintain, and terminate relationships, and will cover several theories of each stage. The film will serve as a vehicle for learning about interpersonal communication and relationships. You will use the theories chosen to analyze the communication between two people in the film. Specifically identify several communication exchanges between characters in the film and discuss to what extent the specifics of the theory are illustrated by the communication choices in those scenes. Broadly, discuss if the theory can be used to understand the communication in the movie and how the communication theory informs the relationship between the two characters. You are expected to write a short, three to four page analysis of the film. To assist with this project you are advised to choose a film about a relationship between two people.

Group Presentation

In this assignment you will work with other students in the class to create a persuasive presentation with voiceover of the slides and/or video recordings of the presentation. The persuasive group project should advance three claims utilizing different types of persuasive appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos). The first claim should identify a problem that currently exists in society and causes 2-3 negative impacts. The second claim should identify 2-3 causes that contribute to the problem’s growth. The third claim should identify 2-3 solutions that could help reduce the problem.

It is up to your group to schedule a time when everyone is available to chat virtually about the group presentation and how you want to divide up the work among the group members. All members of your group are required to participate and complete their portion of the assignment in a timely manner. Students who do not contribute to the group presentation will not receive credit for this presentation.

Group Presentation Role Reflection

In this assignment, you will reflect on the group communication dynamics that appeared in your group project and write a reflection paper that demonstrates you can apply specific types of small group communication roles to your experience in the group.

Informative Speech on Culture

This Informative Speech on Culture requires you identify an object that has a connection to your culture and discuss its connection and personal meaning to you. The speech should be 4-6 minutes and should demonstrate improved delivery compared to the delivery shown in the This Is Me Speech. In addition, an outline is required.

Proctored Assessments

There are two proctored assessments in the course. They are to check your understanding of the concepts learned in the course. Study for the exam by reviewing the chapter readings, the chapter study guides, and by taking the self-check quizzes.
