EDU 250 is designed as a foundational course to satisfy VDOE requirements for teacher licensure with specific emphasis on the professional studies competencies as it relates to exceptional education and inclusive practices.

In order to successfully complete this course, you must demonstrate your understanding of the course materials through:

 Assignment                                                                                               Description
Self-Check Quizzes  Students will complete a multiple-choice quiz covering the content of all modules. Students have 3 attempts to earn a perfect score. These quizzes ensure students have the required foundational knowledge before moving into application-based assignments.
Discussion Boards  Students will participate in online discussions related to the course content on a variety of topics.
E-Portfolio  Students will create an e-portfolio to demonstrate mastery of course objectives. Students will have the opportunity to receive feedback and make improvements on all artifacts before submission. The e-portfolio will include Legal Aspects of Special Education Project, Characteristics Project, UDL Application Project, Petey Reflection (Final Exam), IEP Meeting Observation, Alphabet Soup Journal, and Co-Teaching Observation.
Legal and Historical Aspects of Special Education Project  Students will demonstrate their understanding of legal and historical aspects of special education through a choice of formats. They can write an essay, create a slides presentation, or record a short video of themselves speaking about the criteria laid out in the rubric. This project applies the principles of Universal Design for Learning by providing students a choice of assessment options.
Characteristics of Exceptional Learners project  Students choose a disability category on which to focus and conduct research. Presentations will include an overview of exceptionality, identification procedures, and best educational practices. Presentations will be shared with classmates on a discussion board. This project applies the principles of Universal Design for Learning by providing students a choice of presentation options.
UDL Application Project  Students will apply their learning about Universal Design for Learning to develop a lesson to meet the needs of all learners. Students will choose an SOL or VESOL on which to focus, develop a learning goal, and design learning activities based on the three principles of UDL. They may choose the format by which they demonstrate their knowledge on this project.
Petey Midterm & Final: Authentic Applications  Students will read a memoir summarizing the experiences of Petey, a man born with severe cerebral palsy in the 1920s. Students will develop empathy and understanding of Petey’s perspective. Students will apply their learning about special education law over time, and how Petey could have better been supported today in a classroom under current special education law.
