ENG 243-244 studies major English works from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present, emphasizing the ideas and characteristics of the British literary tradition. The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with some of the more import ant works of English literature as well as with the authors and their themes, and the historical, cultural and aesthetic cont exts in which they were produced. Major topics include:

• Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman literature, such as Beowulf ; Medieval literature such as Chaucer, Romances, Mystery plays, and popular ballads;
• The Sixteenth Century, including Si dney, Spenser, and Shakespeare;
• The Seventeenth Century: Metaphysi cal and Cavalier poets, John Milton;
• The Restoration and Eighteenth Century, such as Pope.

Prerequisite:

Prerequisite for ENG 243 is ENG 112 or ENG 125 or equivalent or division approval.
