Here is an overview of all of the different types of assignments in the course. You can find the detailed directions for the assignments and the grading rubrics in the module where they are assigned.

Discussion Activities

The discussion activities provide you with an opportunity to deeply reflect on the readings assigned to each module and apply them to a problem. They can prepare you for the projects and the proctored assessments. Online discussion allows time to weave your thoughts and reflect on the readings and your experiences. All of the posts on the discussion board are required to be thoughtful, reflective, and concise.

Written Assignments/Essays

The written assignments and essays will help you apply and communicate what you have learned in class.

Read to a Child

Reading to a child regularly this semester helps you to apply some of theoretical principles you will be learning about related to children's literature. Analyzing your experience as you read to a child and examining how and why a child responds to a reading/book will enrich and broaden your perspective about children's literature.

Research Project

You will complete one major research project to share with the class. As we progress through the course together, you will be guided to complete various components for your argument analysis research, and then near the end of the semester you will present your findings from your research in the form of a formal MLA formatted presentation that includes a combination of text and visuals. Your presentation will be a synthesis and analysis of your research.

Author Study

To help you better understand how and why different authors write children's literature, you will conduct an author study, dissecting a specific piece of literature for theme, style and for why an author might have written what they did. You will also consider how the story you analyze might be controversial.

Proctored Assessments

The proctored assessments provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your mastery of the course knowledge. You can find the information on how to take proctored assessments in the Taking Proctored Assessments section of the Syllabus.
