This course is intended to increase the variety and depth of the student's interest, knowledge, and involvement in music and related cultural activities. This course acquaints the student with traditional and twentieth century music literature, emphasizing the relationship music has an art form with man and society. This course also increases the student's awareness of the composers and performers of all eras through listening and concert experiences. The student will learn to understand the art of musical performance. The student will learn the contrasting elements of music from different periods and will be to describe these variances verbally as well as recognize them aurally. The student will learn to recognize basic musical shapes and compositional techniques and will be able to correlate musical growth with the historical growth of art as a whole. The course is designed to acquaint the student with the basic elements of musical composition and the relationship of these elements to a musical composition as a whole. The student will learn to recognize various musical forms and styles and will learn the correlation between the music found in various periods and other art and sociological factors.

There are no prerequisites. This course assumes no prior knowledge of the written or aural aspects of music.
