Here is an overview of all of the different types of assignments in the course. You can find the detailed directions for the assignments and the grading rubrics in the module where they are assigned.
The quality of the assignments determines the number of points you earn for each
assignment up to the maximum number of possible points. Please ask (first on the open forum) if you don't understand an assignment. The open forum is a good way to
communicate with your classmates. If your fellow students cannot answer your question(s), please email me.
- Career Search Interview. Interview someone in the travel industry. This includes travel counselor, tour operator, city/county or state Department of Tourism personnel, Conventions and Visitors Bureau worker, meeting planner, personnel from the Department of Parks and Recreation, airline employee, incentive company personnel, etc. Try to find someone who has your "dream" job. If you have trouble identifying someone in a special area, feel free to seek guidance from your professor.
- Internet Research/Discussion
- Service Learning (up to 70 points). You may earn 10 points for every hour of approved service learning you complete up to 7 hours. Please get approval by the third week of
the course, before completing service learning if you want to earn points for this class.
The service learning needs to be community service (not training) for a not for profit company or a community service event put on by a company. If you participate in
a company's community service activity, you need to tie the experience to something you have learned in this class.
While performing the community service you may ask
business questions, etc. You may perform some duties for a not for profit company, a school, a church, a chamber of commerce or better business bureau. Get my approval
by week three before performing the service to make sure you will be given credit. To receive credit, submit the dates and times you volunteered, a summary of what service
you gave, how it relates to travel and your evaluation of the activity. (i.e. How did this help you professionally?). Please submit all of your service learning at one
time no later than week 7 on the discussion board under "Service Learning".
If you know of places for students to volunteer, please post them on the Service Learning
discussion board and on the Open Forum Discussion Board, but remember to check with me for approval for service learning prior to serving if you want credit for this class.
You may submit your service learning on the discussion board as soon as you have completed the number of hours for which you want credit. Hopefully you will enjoy this and
feel you are helping others and serve more than 7 hours. Think of charities you support or volunteer activities that you would like to do. This is not working in travel,
but community service. It does not have to be travel related but of course that would be nice. Please contact me right away if you need any clarification on service learning.
Write a reflection (on the discussion board when your post your hours and experience) on how you will apply what you learned from the experience(s) to your future career.
- Proctored Assessments. Three (3) proctored exams using Respondus LockDownBrowser + Webcam
- Extra Credit. There are a few opportunities for a few extra credit points (on assessments, when you request the service learning if by week
three). When students ask to complete extra credit in a course (usually at the end of the course), I say my philosophy is if you cannot do the required work, I don't think
you have time for extra credit (except in cases where I give you an opportunity to do so). Final grades will be assigned according to the total number of points you have
earned. If you keep track of your points, you can always tell how close you are to earning the grade you desire.
