Week 16 |
EXAM 3:
WHAT TO EXPECT:
100 points
Exam 3 will have two parts: short-answer and essay.
Part I will consist of brief-answer and matching questions (25 points). The brief-answer questions will cover major facts and concepts from video programs 8-12; from information about Romanticism in Week 10 and Transcendentalism in Week 14 of this COURSE SITE; from TEXT Introductions assigned; and about Irving, Cooper, Poe, Hawthorne, Melville, Douglass, Jacobs, Stowe, Emerson, Thoreau, Longfellow, Whitman, and Dickinson from the TEXT biographical introductions for each. You will not be allowed to use your TEXT or notes for Part I.
Part II will ask you to write one essay answer (75 points). The essay question will be one of the following four. On your exam, I will give you three of these questions and you will choose one to answer. Therefore, prepare answers to two questions, so you will be ready no matter which questions appear as choices. You may prepare and use two pages of quotations only to help you write a successful essay. The lab attendant will attach these notes to your exam pass and send them to ELI. You may not use your TEXT for the exam. Allow approximately 1 and1/2 hours to complete this exam.
TO PREPARE FOR PART II, PLAN ANSWERS FOR TWO OF THE FOLLOWING:
1. What characteristics of Transcendental thought can be seen in Walt Whitman's poetry? Explain by comparing Whitman's ideas to those in Emerson's "Self-Reliance." Offer at least five quotations as evidence for your analysis.
2. What are the differences between slave narratives written by female and male slaves as represented in Jacobs' and Douglass's writings? Illustrate your ideas with a total of at least six quotes from the works.
3. Support this statement: Emily Dickinson questioned, satirized, and rejected the church, feeling its practices did not reflect her faith. Quote from at least four of these poems to illustrate your explanation: #J301, #J324, #J401, #J501, #J1207, #J1545.
4. How does one of these symbols contribute meaning to the central theme of the literary work--grass in Whitman's Song of Myself or waking up in Thoreau's Walden ? (Be sure to state the theme of the work as a complete idea, in a complete sentence. See 'How To: Read, Watch, and Write About Literature') Support your points with a total of at least five brief quotes from the work.

End of Course Evaluation :
The course evaluation is a short online survey of your experiences in this course. Please take a few minutes to complete it as your answers help the instructor improve the course. Your answers are anonymous and grouped with others before the instructor sees them. You will have the opportunity to use a testing center computer to complete the evaluation after the exam, but you may also use any computer to complete the evaluation before or after the exam.
