Week 5

Take: Exam 1

Exam 1 :

WHAT TO EXPECT:

100 points

Exam 1 will have two parts: short-answer and essay.

Part I will consist of brief-answer and matching questions (25 points). The brief-answer questions will cover major facts and concepts from the TEXT Introductions assigned and video programs 1 through 4. The matching questions will cover major information about the Native American works assigned and about Champlain, Smith, Frethorne, Bradford, Winthrop, Bradstreet, Taylor, and Rowlandson, from the text introduction for each. You will not be allowed to use your TEXT or notes for Part I.

Part II will ask you to write one essay answer (75 points). The essay question will be one of the following four. On your exam, I will give you three of these questions and you will choose one to answer. Therefore, prepare answers to two questions, so you will be ready no matter which questions appear as choices. You may prepare and use two pages of quotations only to help you write a successful essay. The lab attendant will attach these notes to your exam pass and send them to ELI. You may not use your text for the exam. Allow approximately 1 1/2 hours to complete this exam.

TO PREPARE FOR PART II, PLAN ANSWERS FOR TWO OF THE FOLLOWING:

1. What attitude toward hard work is dominant in early colonial writing? Explain this attitude, illustrating with at least six quotes. Quote from works by writers from both colonial regions ( Virginia and New England ).

2. Support this statement: Some colonial writers see the new land as a paradise, offering abundant sustenance, but others depict it as a threatening wilderness that will test any settler. Offer at least two quotes each from three writers (total of six quotes) to illustrate your ideas, and speculate on how each writer's view of the land suited her or his purpose for writing.

3. What portrait of marriage emerges from colonial writing? Identify three characteristics of married life; illustrate each characteristic with quotes from at least two writers (total of at least six quotes).

4. Using the writings of at least three Puritans, demonstrate their tendency to interpret everyday events as emblematic of God's will. Explain why their religious beliefs led to this tendency. Support your points with at least two quotes from each writer (total of six quotes).
