Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

Listening:

The student will understand simple spoken Arabic within the limited context of a student with one semester of Arabic study.

Speaking: The students will be able to speak using Modern Standard Arabic. The student will be able to form simple conversation with correct pronunciation at a novice or normal conversational speed.

Reading: The student will be able to comprehend reading selections in rearrangements and combinations of words and expressions already encountered. In addition, the student will be able to build on reading more complicated texts such as basic journal or newspaper. Topics could relate but not limited to different Arab cultures.

Writing: The student will be able to write accurately in Modern Standard Arabic what he/she has learned to understand, say, and read. In this level a student can use different tenses, present, past, and the future form.

Culture:

The ACTFL standards include Culture, Connections, Comparisons and Communities as part of foreign language instruction and assessment. Within these areas, students will be able to:

• Discuss and analyze the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the Arab culture
• Discuss the relationship between the products and perspectives of the Arabic culture
• Acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the Arabic language and its different cultures
• Describe the concept of culture through comparisons of the various cultures that are studied and their own.
• Use the language both within and beyond the school setting
• Read, discuss and write about topics concerning the Arabic-speaking cultures featured in textbooks and in the media using Modern Standard Arabic at the novice level.
• Understand the geography of the Arab world, location, capital cities and understand the Dialectal and Cultural Regions of the Arab World.
