In order to successfully complete this course, you must demonstrate your understanding of the course materials by:

• completing the assignments in each module
• participating actively in the discussion board activities
• submitting the quizzes
• earning a combined average of at least 60% on the proctored assessments
• completing the research essay
• completing the research Powerpoint
• completing the Art Analysis

Here is an overview of all of the different types of assignments in the course. You can find detailed directions for the assignments and the grading rubrics in the module where they are assigned.

• There are 12 chapters divided into 4 learning units in the class. Unit 1 includes and introduction and chapters 20 and 21; Unit 2 includes chapters 22 - 24; Unit 3 includes chapters 25 - 28; and Unit 4 includes chapters 29 - 32. You will find assignment directions in the Learning Modules.
• In this course, I expect that you watch and take careful notes on all required readings/viewings. You will need the information contained in the required readings/viewings for the exams.
• You are required to submit an Introduction Assignment. (Worth 30 points)
• You are required to take chapter quizzes. There are 12 quizzes, worth 10 points each.  (Worth 120 points)
• You are required to complete a Research PowerPoint presentation and two responses.  (Worth 100 points).
• You are required to submit a Research Essay (that includes an in-person museum visit) (Worth 200 points)
• You are required to complete 4 discussions (Worth 100 points)
• You are required to complete an Art Analysis (Worth 50 points)
• You must complete the 4 Proctored Assessments (1 at the end of each Unit - Worth 100 points each; 400 points total)

Discussion Board Activities

The discussion board activities provide you with an opportunity to deeply reflect on the readings assigned to each module and apply them to a problem. They can prepare you for the quizzes and the proctored assessments. Online discussion allows time to weave your thoughts and reflect on the readings and your experiences. All of the posts on the discussion board are required to be thoughtful, reflective, and concise.

Proctored Assessments

There are four (4) proctored assessments. The proctored assessments provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your mastery of the course knowledge. You can find the information on how to take proctored assessments in the Taking Proctored Assesments section of the Syllabus.

Research Essay

This essay fulfills the course requirement to conduct written research on a work of art or architecture. The work of art (or architecture) that you select will also be used to create your Research PowerPoint .

Research Powerpoint

Using the same work of art (or architecture) that you researched and discussed in your Research Essay, you will create a Research PowerPoint. In this PowerPoint, you will compile the important points of your research into a presentation for your classmates.

Art Analysis

This assignment was designed so that you can apply your knowledge of visual analysis, as described in the introduction of your textbook.  Beginning with the visual elements and design principles, the form of the work, to derive at the work's style before considering aspects of its context and content.  Understanding how to apply each of these components and how they work together to inform meaning in a work of art is a very important skill to acquire before beginning your research paper project.
