In order to successfully complete this course, you must demonstrate your understanding of the course materials by:

Required Reading/Viewing

This course uses open educational resources (OER). You will find a list of links to online videos, articles, or interactive exercises. These resources will introduce you to artists, art historical movements and various specific artworks. The videos and websites will give you an overview of how these artists helped shape the art historical movements and why the works discussed are representative of each movement.

Vocabulary Exercises and Quizzes

Vocabulary exercises will help you practice recalling terms you learn in each module. Use of these terms will be critical in discussions, research projects, and proctored assessments.

Module Quizzes

The module quizzes are a reflection of the proctored assessments. They can help you monitor your own learning, get you familiar with the testing environment in Canvas, and prepare you for the proctored assessments.

Research Projects

There are two research projects in this course.

Project 1 provides you opportunities to examine German Expressionism of the 1930s and 1940s and the "Nazi Degenerate Art Exhibition" while learning about the individual artists exhibited and what restrictions, punishments, or other actions were taken against the artists for conveying Expressionism during that era. It also shows how government interference and action can destroy artists and their artworks (and their place in history).

Project 2 provides you an opportunity to learn about an individual artist of color or ethnic background who uses their art to comment on social or cultural issues. You will note the materials and the method of artmaking used to convey a dialog with the viewer and become familiar with social practices employed in art.

Discussions

The discussion activities provide you an opportunity to examine artists and their artworks during the time period covered in this course. You will be able to apply the key terms and words learned in the course and evaluate the artists and their art work in the art movements in a professional way.

Proctored Assessments

The proctored assessments provide you an opportunity to demonstrate that you have achieved the learning objectives. You can find the information on how to take proctored assessments in the Taking Proctored Assessments section of the Syllabus.
