- Discussion forum replies must initially be made to another student's initial posting. Replies must be 2-4 sentences. Responses like "I agree" or "Sounds good" are not acceptable.
Cheng & Tsui's FluencyLink Textbook and Workbook Site
- The textbook we are using for this course is from Cheng & Tsui. It has a FluencyLink website, which has the textbook's online workbook and interactive content.
- There are a lot of instructional and practice activities on the site which give you immediate feedback. You can repeat the practice activities as many times as you wish. They are important and necessary for you to understand the Chinese language and culture. (I will check to see if you complete those practice activities. )
Quizzes and Proctored Assessments
- Every lesson has a quiz.
- There are three proctored assessments and three oral exams in the course. The written exams have two parts - listening and written.
- The listening and written exams are proctored. You will be graded on writing, listening, and understanding. If you have difficulty hearing the recordings during the exam, notify your instructor or the proctor immediately.
- Schedule an online meetings time with your instructor for each oral exam.
- There is an authentic project assignment for this course.
Online Meeting
- Every part of the lesson has an optional real-time online meeting (we will use Zoom to host the meetings) where you can interact with me and other students as part of the learning process. Your participation in these meetings is crucial to your success in the class. I strongly recommend that you make an effort to participate in these meetings so you can practice what you have learned, ask questions, share learning experiences, and discuss anything of interest with your classmates. They will definitely help you learn Chinese.
- You will earn bonus points by attending each online class meeting. For those of you who missed the online meeting but viewed the recorded session, you will also get the bonus points if you can submit the "phrases of the week" to me.
- In order to participate, you will need a computer, Internet connection, web browser, speakers, and a microphone or headset.
Oral Assignments
Those exercises are important components to help you learn Chinese.
Language Exchange Practice
You will practice the use of the Chinese language with your language practice partner.
