The required textbook and materials for this course are:

1. TEXTBOOK: Engineering Problem Solving with C++, 4th ed., Delores M. Etter and Jeanine A. Ingber, Prentice Hall. ISBN: 9780134444291

For specific information, see the Alexandria Campus bookstore listing.

PLEASE make sure you receive a C++ textbook.  There are similar textbooks by the same author for the C language, which is different, and students have reported purchasing a textbook then receiving the WRONG book.

2. IDE (integrated development environment):  You should get an IDE software package that includes a C++ compiler installed in your home computer to do the exercises and assignments.  The Software is FREE.

If you have PC you can download it from Microsoft web site. Please see the  tutorial that explains how to get the FREE IDE with C++ compiler, and the attached “How_to_Get_FREE_Compiler_for_PC” documents.  Also, read the discussion board post on Orwell Dev C++.

If you have MAC, please see the tutorial "How_to_Get_FREE_Compiler_for_MAC.”

Once you have the IDE installed on your computer, you can submit the assignment to take a screen shot of your installation.  To use the software, you may follow the step-by-step guide on “How to set up and use the compiler” tutorial. The document named as “How_to_Setup_Compiler” is the step-by-step guide.

For installation problems, please consult IT Support at 703-764-5051 or eliitsupport@nvcc.edu.
