Here is an overview of all of the different types of assignments in the course. You can find the detailed directions for the assignments and the grading rubrics in the module where they are assigned.

Research Paper I/ Interview

You will interview a working interpreter in the field and then write a report on the experience.  The paper should include: a summary of the interview, the training and education of the interpreter, his/her current work setting, any certifications he/she holds, techniques that they use for successful dynamic equivalence, and your reaction to the interview.  The paper should be typed, double spaced, and AT LEAST TWO FULL pages in length.  Do not include the name of the interpreter in your paper.  You may not interview anyone in this course, even if they are already working as interpreters. I suggest you look for someone you don’t know- this is a networking opportunity!

Research Paper II

You will attend an interpreted event. Describe the situation/setting.  Then think about what worked and what did not work for the interpretation.  Some questions to ponder include: How did the interpreter set up situation?  Where did everyone sit/ stand?  Did the interpreter relay the intent of the message including the appropriate register?  Was there dynamic equivalence?  Was the affect conveyed in the interpretation?  What areas seemed difficult for the interpreter?  How did he/she handle these difficulties?  What logistical issues popped up?  How did the interpreter handle them?  Then include your reaction to the experience. The paper should be typed, double spaced, and at least two pages in length.  Do not include the name of the interpreter in your paper.  You may not observe any one from this class, even if they are already working as an interpreter.

Class Attendance and Participation

This is a synchrous class. You are expected to to attend class meetings via Zoom.  Records will be kept through Qwickly Attendance.  it is your responsibility to get the code each week in class and to log in. It is also your responsibility to make sure that your attendance accurately reflects when you came to class.  I will not change any Qwickly date from absent to present that is more than 24 hours past the time of the class.  My old brain just can not verify that you were actually in class a month ago like you thought you were.

Two absences will have no impact on your final grade.  Life happens.  After this, you final grade will be lowered by a full letter grade for each absence.  There is an exception to every rule, so make an appointment to talk to me if you have special circumstances.

This is a CAMERA ON AT ALL TIMES class.  IF you have questions or concerns about this policy, please discuss it with me privately.  If there is a circumstance where you feel you can not turn your camera on for a class period (we have all had those days), please send me a private message at the beginning of that class.  Without any notification, or if it becomes a habit, then you will not be marked PRESENT for each class where you turned off your camera.

Final Exam

The final exam will be a chance for you to reflect on you translation skills that you have developed throughout the course.
