Prerequisites
None for Japanese language background. However, the following are requirements for entry into this course:
- Functional fluency in English.
- Microphone/head set and ability to record your own voice.
- Access to a scanner to scan your own writing: "Students Activities Manual" assignments and upload them in PDF .
- Internet connection strong enough to be able to participate in video conference activities with your classmates.
Course Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Greet someone and introduce themselves in both a linguistically and culturally appropriate manner in Japanese.
- Describe, ask personal information, such as nationality, where they are from, what year they are in school, major, hobby and job.
- Tell time to the minute and day of the week when they have class and/or upcoming events.
- Describe, ask (in both yes/no questions and wh-questions) and answer questions about what they usually do on weekends, what they did last weekend, the location and the description of the buildings, and what they have and who is in their rooms in Japanese.
- Read and write in both Hiragana and Katakana.
- Write self-introductions and compose simple memos.
- Analyze, and compare to their own culture, some aspect of Japanese culture, such as etiquette in meeting and greeting people, college life, and geography and demographics of Japan.
