Initial Online Meeting with Instructor
Students must individually sign up for the online meeting during the first week of the semester, and talk with the instructor.  This gives students an opportunity to talk with their instructor in Japanese and determine student’s current level of skills and knowledge. This information determines if JPN202 is the most appropriate course for students this semester.  Students earn 2% of the final grade for completing this assignment.

Exams 1, 2, 3 Written/Listening Exam      
The exams will cover the contents in Chapter 1, 2, and 3 of Nakama 2.  There are written (vocabulary, grammar, kanji, reading, writing) and Listening sections.

Exam 4 Written/Listening Exam
This exam will cover the contents in Chapter 1, 2, 3 and 4 of Nakama 2.  There are written (vocabulary, grammar, kanji, reading, writing) and Listening sections.

Final Oral Exam
During the final week, students sign up for the online final oral exam with the instructor.  The exam will be 15 minutes.  The topics covered in the exam are health, travel plans, future plan, and asking for favors and offering help.  Role play is one of the tasks.

Homework
Vocabulary homework

• Familiarize yourself with new vocabularies in Quizlet and memorize them.
• Practice vocabularies and complete Canvas Vocabulary Quiz.

Listening homework           

• Practice and complete Listening Comprehension Exercises in Canvas.

Scripting dialogue exercise homework

• Practice dictating and typing words/phrases in a short dialogue between two people accurately, and getting ideas how the dialogue can be completed appropriately.

Kanji tracing homework

• Trace and practice writing new 23 Japanese characters in the worksheet with the correct stroke order and penmanship:

           
Kanji reading homework   

• Retype hiragana sentences to sentences in hiragana, katakana, and kanji appropriately in the worksheet.

Kanji typing homework

• Provide and type the appropriate reading of new Japanese characters in hiragana and complete Canvas Kanji Exercises.

           
Reading homework

• Using their knowledge of the real world, read and complete Reading Comprehension Exercises in Canvas.

Discussion                            

• Read discussion topics relating to introduced topic in each chapter, watch videos, post their opinions, and exchange ideas (at least two replies to classmates for full credits) in Canvas.

Speak Up homework

• Review slideshows to understand new grammatical patterns in each chapter.
• Post (record) in Canvas and practice speaking with the new patterns.

Chapter Writing Exercise

• Complete a writing exercise at the end of each chapter.  One topic is given and students handwrite their thoughts and ideas using vocabulary and grammar they learn in each chapter.

            One on one online speaking practice with instructor    

• Practice what students learn each week by meeting the instructor in Conference of Canvas.  Students are required to complete five sessions by the end of semester.
