Overview of Assignments

In order to successfully complete this course, you must demonstrate your understanding of the course materials by:

  • Completing the assignments in each unit, which includes readings, writing, listening and speaking activities
  • earning a combined average of at least 60% on the proctored assessments
  • Participating actively in the discussion board activities

It is very important for you to work steadily in your oral and written assignments to prevent falling behind. You will find due dates and benchmarks here in the Modules folder. The pacing provided will help you stay on track with your studies throughout this course. Online studies will develop your organizational skills and personal scheduling.

Here is an overview of all of the different types of assignments in the course. You can find detailed directions for the assignments and the grading criteria in the module where they are assigned.

Discussion Board Activities

The discussion board activities provide you with an opportunity to deeply reflect on the readings assigned to each module and apply them to a problem. They can prepare you for the quizzes and the proctored assessments. Online discussion allows time to weave your thoughts and reflect on the readings and your experiences. All of the posts on the discussion board are required to be thoughtful, reflective, and concise.

  • The introduction can be in English.
  • Discussion forum replies must initially be made to another student's initial posting.  Replies must be 2-4 sentences.  Responses like "I agree" or "Sounds good" are not acceptable.

ILRN Activities

  • You will be completing assignments in two online texts: Spanish for Medical Personnel text and the Basic Spanish Grammar text
  • Some assignments will require completing and submitting an individual exercise, some will require recording and submitting an exercise with a partner, while some will require listening and reading without submitting anything.
  • For some assignments you will receive a grade in Spanish for Medical Personnel Text and the Basic Spanish Grammar text.  You will receive a LeccĂon grade in each text. The combined score will be recorded in your Canvas grade center.  The required activities are listed in the Modules Section.
  • Check the ILRN grade book and the Canvas Grade Center often.  You will see your grades and I may also post some comments or feedback for particular assignments.
  • Many of the assignments you can repeat often for practice and improve your grade.  Some however, will have a limited number of attempts and/or will not provide feedback.
  • When completing recordings in the online texts, first introduce yourself at the beginning of the recording so I can know who is speaking during the recording.
  • If you have trouble meeting with a classmate online to do the recordings, get in touch with me right away so I can help you.

Proctored Assessments

  • The assessments have two parts - written & oral.
  • The written assessments are proctored.  You will be graded on writing, listening and understanding.  If you have difficulty hearing the recordings during the assessment, notify your instructor or the test proctor immediately.
  • The oral portion of the assessment is taken at home directly in Canvas using the recording tool.  You will be able to hear your own recording, but not those of your classmates.  The grades will appear in the Canvas grade book.
  • You must earn a combined average of at least 60% on the proctored assessments.
