Welcome to Principles of Accounting I, ACC 211, offered by the Extended Learning Institute of Northern Virginia Community College. ACC 211 Principles of Accounting I presents accounting principles and their applications to various businesses. It covers income determination, asset valuation, and financial reporting. The course studies both service and merchandise operations including internal controls and analysis of financial statements.
This course is designed to give the beginning business student a general understanding of the purpose of accounting, the capacity to perform basic accounting functions, and a working knowledge in financial statement preparation. Computer instruction is included.
As a virtual hybrid course, ACC 211 has live online weekly meetings on the Internet using eNOVA (Powered by Centra) that require mandatory attendance. |

Objectives |

The goals of this course are to:

Determine the definition and application of assets, liabilities, revenue and expense.

Explain the accounting methods of a sole proprietor and a merchandiser.

Explain the purpose of accounting.

Perform basic accounting functions.

Apply the procedures on financial statement preparation.

Understand computerized accounting.

Analyze routine business transactions and events, record them in a journal and ledger, summarize recorded data, determine effects of internal value changes within the business enterprise, and prepare financial statements.

Identify the accounting theories and practices relevant to the management of personal and career finances.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

There are four (4) online proctored exams in this course that are password protected and must be taken at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course |

2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
