Overview

During previous years some scholars have debated that criminal investigation is an art and not a science. Others have argued that modern investigative methods are primarily scientific in nature. In recent years, major technological developments have increased law enforcement services and advanced crime solving capabilities. Criminal investigation is indeed an art; an art that embraces and incorporates many precepts of modern science and technology.

This course presents an overview of the fundamentals of criminal investigation and introduces the student to a variety of investigative procedures and techniques. It also examines the collection, handling, and preservation of evidence and trace materials. The course traverses the initial investigative steps of information, interrogation, and instrumentation to collect and assemble detailed information. An overview of specific offenses, and special investigative techniques and methods are also studied.

Since ELI courses are self-paced, you take exams when you are ready. You must take the on-campus exams at one of the five NVCC campus Testing Centers. See ELI Policies and Procedures for locations and phone numbers and information about proctors for students who live outside the Northern Virginia area. Call the Testing Center before you go to make sure they will be open and will stay open long enough for you to complete the exams. Take along a photo ID and the appropriate Exam Pass

There are three at-home, open-book exams, and three proctored, on-campus, closed-book exams in this course. Each consists of approximately 50 multiple-choice and true-false questions. The at-home exams will help you prepare for the on-campus exams.
