SCIENCE LABORATORY SAFETY RULES
FOR ELI BIO 102

These rules have been established to assure safe conditions for all those who use the campus science laboratory facilities. It is mandatory that each student read, understand, and agree to abide by these rules. Any infractions will result in dismissal from the lab.
Print out a copy of these rules, sign it and bring it with you to the lab for submission to your instructor.

1. No student will be permitted in the laboratory without an instructor. Only assigned and supervised laboratory activities may be performed. Visitors and children are NOT PERMITTED.
2. Students may not begin working or gathering supplies and equipment until their instructor is present. Do not touch any equipment or supplies without specific authorization.
3. Eating, drinking, or use of tobacco products is not permitted.
4. Soft contact lenses must not be worn in the laboratory. Eye damage may occur.
5. Wear appropriate clothing and required protective covering while in the laboratory. No one will be permitted in the laboratory with bare feet, sandals, or with shoes which do not provide adequate foot coverage. Legs should also be covered.
6. All students must wear laboratory aprons and goggles as directed.
7. Know the location and operational details of all laboratory safety equipment and evacuation routes and procedures. Upon the sounding of the fire alarm, or receipt of other instructions to evacuate, students must immediately turn off all equipment and leave the building. The building may not be re-entered until an "all clear" signal is issued by authorized college personnel.
8. All aisles in the laboratory must be kept open at all times. Personal belongings are to be kept out of the work area.
9. Never taste a chemical. Any chemical spilled on the skin should be washed off immediately and the skin flushed with cold water for several minutes.
10. Immediately report all unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, unusual odors, personal injuries and spilled chemicals to the supervising instructor, or other laboratory personnel, who will then determine the proper course of action.
11. Ask your instructor for the proper method of disposing of chemicals and waste materials.
12. Always thoroughly clean your working area and glassware when finished.
13. Return all equipment and supplies to their proper location after use.
14. Stay out of restricted areas (including but not limited to the staff prep/office area, storage areas, and other locations so posted or otherwise indicated).
15. Avoid laboratory hazards. Secure long hair when working near hazards. Report open or bandaged cuts to the instructor.
16. Carefully follow all instructions from faculty and staff members.
17. Persons not following these rules will be asked to leave the laboratory and may be removed from their class.
18. Material Safety Data Sheets and the Alexandria Campus Hazard Communication Plan are on file in the laboratory office and are available to anyone who would like to read them.
I have read and agree to abide by these rules.
