Course Objectives Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify diverse types of family patterns, including characteristics and influences
  • Describe the way in which families function as systems within and across communities
  • Distinguish family stressors, typical reactions to stress, and risk factors for family dysfunction
  • Recognize the importance of diversity and culture in the growth of development in children, families, and communities
  • Create models for parent involvement within early childhood education classrooms
  • Formulate strategies for effective communication between home and school
  • Locate community resources, both public and private that support families
  • Illustrate the importance of the role of advocacy in early childhood education
  • Identify and apply standards as they relate to working with children and families: the Child Development Milestones, and Core Competencies for Early Childhood Professionals

Possible Assignments Include: (Subject to change each semester. The actual assignments are available in the Syllabus in the Blackboard course site on the first day of classes.)

Your course grade will be determined by the weighted total of assignments.  The points are not the indicator of grade, except for individual assignments.  Your grade will be calculated according to the following percentages.

3.  Community Research and Interview-10% of final grade

4.  Diversity Research and Interview-10% of final grade

5.  Child Transitions Profile-5% of final grade

6.  Back to School Night Project-20% of final grade

7.  Parent Resource Web Page-20% of final grade

8.  Midterm Exam-10% of final grade

9.  Final Exam-10% of final grade

Your final grade may be based on the following scale. Please note that you must also pass at least several exams in order to pass the course, regardless of your scores on the other assignments.
