ENG 244: Survey of English Literature II (3 Credits)
Overview

ENG 243-244 studies major English works from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present, emphasizing the ideas and characteristics of the British literary tradition. The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with some of the more import ant works of English literature as well as with the authors and their themes, and the historical, cultural and aesthetic cont exts in which they were produced.

Major topics include:

  • Nineteenth Century: major and representative Romantic and Victorian poets; major Victorian prose writers
  • Twentieth Century: major poets, such as T.S. Eliot, and Yeats; Joyce and representative fiction writers and dramatists  

Prerequisites: ENG 112 or ENG 125 or equivalent or division approval

  1. Identify general cultural developments for the periods involved.
  2. Identify general literary developments for the periods involved.
  3. Identify example literary works for these periods. 
  4. Relate example literary works to general cultural and literary developments of these periods.
  5. Explicate individual works of literature.
