Overview 

 

  This course will cover Microsoft Word XP, Microsoft Excel XP, Microsoft Access XP, and Microsoft PowerPoint XP with an overview of Windows and essential computer concepts. IST 117 does not cover Outlook.

Objectives 

 


If you do well in this course, you will be able to: 
  1. Describe the typical components of a microcomputer. 
  2. Identify and discuss the four main functions of computer hardware: input, processing, output, and storage. 
  3. Identify the important categories of microcomputer software and explain what they do and how they work in general terms. 
  4. Use the operating system to perform file management operations such as copying, moving, renaming, deleting and subdirectory (folder) organization. 
  5. Identify and discuss the basic activities involved in word processing. 
  6. Use Word to create and edit a document, create a research paper, and create a resume and cover letter with a table using a wizard. 
  7. Identify and discuss the basic activities involved in working with a spreadsheet. 
  8. Use Excel to create a worksheet and chart and incorporate formulas, functions, and formatting into a worksheet. 
  9. Identify and discuss the basic activities involved in working with a database. 
  10. Use Access to create the structure and contents of a database and create and perform queries. 
  11. Identify and discuss the basic activities involved in working with a presentation. 
  12. Use PowerPoint to create a presentation using a design template and autolayouts.

Materials 

 


You may purchase the textbook and software for this course at any of the five NVCC bookstores.  See ELI Policies and Procedures for locations and phone numbers. You may also purchase your textbook by mail by calling (888) 744-7839. Purchasing textbooks and materials by mail takes longer, so order early. 

You will use Microsoft Office XP in this course.

Shelly, Cashman, Vermaat - Microsoft Office XP - Introductory Concepts and Techniques, ENHANCED (Word 2002, Excel 2002, Access 2002, PowerPoint 2002 and Outlook 2002), 2003. ISBN: 0-619-20002-2 (perfect bound) or 0-619-20004-9 (spiral bound)

Software:

Office XP (2002) Professional Edition. To find out what edition of the software you have, start one of the programs like Word. Click Help on the main menu and then click About Microsoft Word. A screen will appear specifying the version that you are using. Make sure you get the Professional version of Office XP. The standard version does not include Access. 

Windows (98, 2000, ME, or XP) operating system software.

Exams 

 


Since ELI courses are self-paced, you take exams when you are ready. You must take the on-campus exams at one of the five NVCC campus Testing Centers. See ELI Policies and Procedures for locations and phone numbers and information about proctors for students who live outside the Northern Virginia area. Call the Testing Center before you go to make sure they will be open and will stay open long enough for you to complete the exams. Take along a photo ID and the appropriate Exam Pass

There are three proctored exams in this course.

Beginning the Course

 


1. Use your web browser to connect to www. nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Log on to your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to your Blackboard account.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.

Please note that account generation takes approximately one week from the time of your paid registration. If you cannot log on after one week, contact the IT Help Desk.
