Overview

This course explores the creation of digital graphics for Web design. Basic design elements such as color and layout will be explored using a computer graphics program.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will:

  • Be familiar with one of the computer graphics packages, (Macromedia Fireworks) used to create web graphics
  • Be able to create new graphics files with a given size and descriptions.
  • Be able to edit a graphics file by adding colors, effects, and filters.
  • Be comfortable in adding a layer to an image and editing layered images.
  • Be able to save a graphics file in different internet formats, providing for fast downloads.
  • Understand different graphic concepts and terminology related to web graphics.

You will also need the following:

  • Course Software: Students may use either Adobe (formerly Macromedia) Fireworks or Adobe Photoshop for the coursework and exercises in this class. Lecture materials are designed using Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Fireworks 8/CS2. Most of the assignments may be relatively easily adapted for older or newer versions, however, recognize that there will be some differences. You will need one of these software programs to complete the course assignments. You may purchase an education version of the software from many different vendors. Trial downloads of the software will not provide access long enough to complete the coursework. If you do not have access to the software, you will need to use the on-campus computer labs to complete your work.
  • A Computer: This can be Windows-based, Macintosh, or Linux/Unix operating system. Directions and instructor presentations are given based on a Windows-based PC. Mac and Linux/Unix users will need to adapt the instructions for their own use.
  • Web Browser: Recommended that you have Internet Explorer (at least version 6) and Netscape Navigator (at least version 7) for testing. Other browsers that support JavaScript are acceptable. For several of the exercises, your browser must be configured to permit JavaScript to run.
  • Browser Plug-ins: Some material for this class may be made available in Adobe Acrobat format (which requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in) and Flash (which requires the Macromedia Flash plug-in). These plug-ins are available for free download. For more information on plug-ins, click the External Links button on the Blackboard menu.

Exams

 

There are two (2) online proctored exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.

Please note that account generation takes approximately one week from the time of your paid registration. If you cannot log on after one week, contact the IT Help Desk. If you can log on to Blackboard, but your course isn't listed, please contact ELI or your instructor.
