RAD 121 is the first of a two-semester sequence. This course introduces procedures for positioning the patient's anatomical structures relative to x-ray beam and image receptor, emphasizing procedues for routine examination of the chest, abdomen, extremities, and the axial skeleton.
This course includes an online component, a lab component and an online virtual classroom.
Prerequisite: entrance into the radiography program
Co-requisites: RAD 100 and RAD 125

Objectives |

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

Identify the topographic anatomy of the bones in the body.
- Understand radiographic positions, projections and planes of the body
- Position and obtain adequate radiographs for the following anatomy:
a. upper extremity
b. shoulder girdle
c. lower extremity
d. pelvic girdle
e. chest and abdomen

The required textbook for this course is:
- Radiographic Positioning and Related Anatomy, 6th edition, by Brontrager and Lampignano, Elsevier/Mosby, 2005
- Radiographic Positioning and Related Anatomy, Workbook and Laboratory Manual, Volume One by Bontrager and Lampignano, Elevier/Mosby, 2005
- Pocket Manual for Radiologic Positioning, by Mary Madigan, Appleton and Lange, 1997.
In addition you will need a computer with speakers and microphone or headset in order to participate in the weekly virtual class meetings.

Exams |

There are 5 proctored exams in this course. You are expected to take 3 of your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course |

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
