RUS 101: Beginning Russian I (4 Credits)

In this course you learn the key components of Russian, which will help you communicate with Russians, read some basic texts, write some of your own, understand what Russians are saying to you (but not everything), and learn to navigate your way through some of the intricacies of Russian culture. In Russian 101 you learn the most important grammatical features of Russian (you complete your knowledge of basic Russian grammar in 102), and a fair number of high frequency words

Entry Level Competencies:

  • an interest in Russian, Russia and Russian-speaking countries.
  • a willingness to learn and try new things
  • curiosity
  • a spirit of adventure
  • resilience (for those times when you don't feel any progress or when it feels like Russian is too hard - it isn't).

If you complete this course and do well, you will be able to:

  • build your proficiency in the five skill areas: speaking, reading, writing, understanding and knowledge of Russian culture, history, traditions and life.
  • read in a different script.
  • handle, but not automatically yet, the four most important cases (there are six--you learn the other two and practice them all in Russian 102).
  • talk with Russians about yourself, who you are, what you study, where you study, where you live, how you spend your time, and other practical topics.
  • ask Russians questions and understand many of the answers
  • use the Internet in Russian
  • type in Russian (even if you can't type in English!)
