TRV 100: Introduction to the Travel Industry (3 Credits)

Overview


This course presents an overview of the structure and scope of the travel industry with an emphasis on job categories and functions, basic vocabulary, and the interrelationships of the various components. It also includes the study of information displays of an airline computer reservations system.

The course is designed for students with no background in the travel business other than their personal travel and who want to have a better understanding of the inner workings of the various branches of the industry, either in order to be more knowledgeable when making travel arrangements or to become future employees in the industry.

Objectives

 

If you do well in this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify the components of the travel product--the suppliers and sellers, and describe the interrelationship between each.
  2. Summarize major historical changes in the development of modern tourism.
  3. Describe the operating structure, day-to-day activities, and job positions in the different segments of the industry.
  4. Define and decode specialized travel terminology and abbreviations common to the industry.
  5. Identify basic information required for itinerary planning.
  6. Become familiar with periodicals and reference materials used by the travel industry.
  7. Describe the basic functions of an airline computer reservations system.
  8. Perform simple information retrieval on airline reservations system.

Exams

 

There are 4 exams in this course. You are expected to take your examinations at one of the NVCC campus Testing Centers. Be sure to allow enough time to complete your exam before the Testing Center closes; Testing Centers have specific policies relating to the administration of ELI exams. You will need to take a photo ID, your NovaConnect empl ID number, and the appropriate Exam Pass when you go to the Testing Center.

Beginning the Course

 

1. Use your web browser to connect to http://www.nvcc.edu/bbstart. Follow the directions to determine your email, Blackboard and VIVA account user names and passwords.
2. Access your email account and make sure you know how to use it; you will be required to use this account for all course-related email.
3. Log on to Blackboard at http://learn.vccs.edu.
4. Click on this course under "My Courses." Review the entire course to make sure you understand what will be required of you. Then start completing the assignments.
