BIOLOGY INTERNET PROJECT

Purpose of the Internet Project:

In Unit 1 you studied the diversity of life and the fundamentals of ecology and evolution. Now that you have some foundation for discussing these topics, you will explore the role of an environmental organization in preventing habitat destruction and in protecting biodiversity and endangered species.

This assignment requires you to study a web page, which is protected by copyright just as a textbook or a song is protected. Therefore when you prepare your answers, you must write them in your own words. If you want to take material word for word from the web page, YOU MUST use quotations marks. For example, the organization’s mission can be repeated word for word from the site; however you must show that by using quotation marks. This caution against plagiarism applies to all biology assignments. If you need further clarification on what is acceptable, please contact your instructor or the writing center.

Project Directions:
A. Select a Site
Choose one of the following web sites by clicking on its title.  All sites deal with various aspects of biodiversity, endangered species, or habitat destruction. Before you select which site you will use for this project, you should quickly visit several of them to decide which would interest you the most.

B. Explore the Site
Using the links in the web site you have selected, explore each link and then answer the following questions.

1. What is the name of the site you selected and what organization sponsors this site?

2. What is the mission or goal of the organization that sponsors this site? Is it a governmental, educational, or a private nonprofit organization?

3. What has this organization accomplished? Describe two projects it has sponsored.

4. Describe one example, developed at this site, of habitat destruction or of an endangered species.

5. What role can an individual play to address the problems raised? Be specific.

6. Discuss the most interesting information you learned at this site. Be specific.

7. Discuss how some aspect of the information developed at this site relates to what you have studied in the course. Be specific.
