Overview

CHM 111 is designed primarily for science and engineering majors.  It explores the fundamental laws, theories, and mathematical concepts of chemistry.  Prerequisites for CHM 111 include satisfactory placement scores for ENG 111 and MTH 166 or higher level mathematics course.

Entry Level Competencies:   Satisfactory completion of a high school chemistry course or its equivalent is strongly recommended.    Since this course is taught in part over the World Wide Web, you should also be familiar with how to use a standard Web browser (Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer) and electronic mail.

Exams

Since ELI courses are self-paced, you take exams when you are ready. You must take the exams at one of the five NVCC campus Testing Centers. See ELI Policies and Procedures for locations and phone numbers and information about proctors for students who live outside the Northern Virginia area. Call the Testing Center before you go to make sure they will be open and will stay open long enough for you to complete the exams. Take along a photo ID and the appropriate Exam Pass.

You may use a 3" x 5" hand-written study card for Exams 1, 2, 3, and 4. (NOT TO BE USED FOR THE LAB SAFETY QUIZ, NOMENCLATURE TEST, AND EXAM 5) You must hand-write the information you would like to have on your card yourself -- no technology miracles allowed. Formulas, constants, definitions, concepts, solubility tables, etc., may be on the study card. NO SAMPLE PROBLEMS are allowed to be on the card. You may write on both sides of the study card. The card must be submitted with your exam. Any abuse of this privilege will result in a failing grade for the course.

There are five exams in this course; There is no comprehensive final exam.
