Overview

Engineering graphics is the language that is used universally by engineers to describe the size and shape of structures and mechanisms.  This course is designed to help the student understand and use that language.  You will develop skills in manual graphics (lettering and sketching) using the proper drawing instruments; and create working drawings.  You will learn how computers are used to assist in the solution of engineering problems and you will use computer-aided-design (CAD) software for course exercises.

Entry Level Competencies:   Proficiency in plane Euclidian plane geometry, acquired in high school.
Since this course is taught in part over the World Wide Web, you should also be familiar with how to use a standard Web browser (Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer) and electronic mail.

Objectives

If you do well in this course, you will:

1. Acquire the basic skills of lettering and sketching.

2. Develop the ability to conceptualize solids in three dimensional displays, both manually and via micro-computer, using simple CAD software.

3. Learn basic skills in descriptive geometry as it is applied to the solution of graphics engineering problems.

4. Develop good study habits and an appreciation of standards of accuracy, timeliness and quality required in the engineering profession.

MAJOR ELEMENTS OF CONTENT

1. Manual single stroke Gothic lettering
2. Sketching: orthographic, isometric and oblique
3. Use of drawing instruments (no ink)
4. Orthographic projection of points, lines, planes and solids

Exams

Since ELI courses are self-paced, you take exams when you are ready. You must take the exam at one of the five NVCC campus Testing Centers. See ELI Policies and Procedures for locations and phone numbers and information about proctors for students who live outside the Northern Virginia area. Call the Testing Center before you go to make sure they will be open and will stay open long enough for you to complete the exams. Take along a photo ID and the appropriate Exam Pass.

There is one final exam in this course, which consists of two parts:  Traditional Board Drawing and Computer-Aided Drawing.
