Communication!

The most important part of this class is communication.  We'll be examining how authors communicate their ideas and learning how to communicate our own ideas more effectively.  In order to do this, we need to be able to communicate with each other.

You have been assigned a VCCS email address for use in this and other courses that you take through NVCC or other colleges in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). The VCCS requires that you use this email account for any course-related email communication so that we can insure your privacy as required by law. If you don't know your VCCS email address, go to the Start Page.

To log on to your email account and check for mail, click the Student Email tab near the top of this page. Enter your complete email address as your user name. Use the same password as you first used to log onto Blackboard (either the birth date you gave when you registered, or the last 4 digits of your student number). If you need help using the email account, read the Webmail Manual.

Please check your email regularly. That is how I will inform you of grades, approaching due dates, or other private, course-related information. I will also reply to your emails at your VCCS account. Please write 112 as the first word of the subject of each email you send me.  I will not accept or respond to email sent by you from any account other than the one provided by the VCCS.

If you wish to allow other students to contact you through your college email account, take the following steps:

  • Click on Student Tools (to the left).
  • Click on Personal Information.
  • Click on Set Privacy Options.
  • Check the box next to Email Address.
  • Click Submit at the bottom of the page.

Caution:  Be aware that the entire class will have access to your email address (but not the other information), so make sure the email address you enter is one you're willing to share with us.

Because whatever appears on the internet is a public forum, please make sure that you use appropriate language and communicate respectfully with me and your classmates.  The rules of Netiquette should be observed.

Now what?

This is also the time to find your way around the Blackboard website.  If you haven't used it before, be sure you become familiar with it.
