Resources for
Understanding and Writing about Hemingway
The VCCS
Litonline group also developed a website
about Hemingway's story, "Hills like White Elephants." As you'll see as you
examine it, it contains a number of wonderful features. The first
thing you'll come to as you page through (by clicking on the train on
the right at the bottom of the page) is a Site Map. It contains
links to all of the pages in this site. Read
through all of the pages.
Begin by reading pages 2 and 3 to acquire some
background information about the story and a sense of the meaning of the
term, "setting" in literature. Then find out a
little about Hemingway.
Then go to the hypertext
version of "Hills like White Elephants." You'll find the short story and comments and questions about the text
below when you click on one of the highlighted terms or symbols.
You may also be interested in seeing how someone else reads and
interprets a story. Please read the commentary
on the story. First, read the
comments and questions and then consider if they're the same things
you were thinking as you read. If not, then try to figure out how
your thinking differs from this person's interpretation.
