Introduction |
LBR105 is a
student-centered one credit course designed to develop the following remote
research skills: accessing, locating, evaluating , and utilizing digital and
cataloged resources. Students have guided materials in the course combined with
personal assistance from the designated Course Instructor on the campus they
select. |
Course Purpose |
Each of the assignments is
designed to provide you with a product that you can use as a building block for writing a
research paper or research report. |
Audience |
Students in LBR105 are
either: 1) taking the course independently of any other course to develop remote
research skills or 2) taking the course in conjunction with another ELI course to earn one
credit for completing a research assignment. |
Research Tools |
Research
tools include online databases provided by Northern Virginia Community
College (NVCC), the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA),
and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). Individual sites from
the World Wide Web (WWW) are also included. |
Learning Goal |
Upon successful completion of
LBR105, students could have as many as 20 information sources including 4 cataloged
items, 4 reference sources, 4 magazine articles, 4 newspaper articles, and 4 individual
web sites to incorporate into a research paper. |
Delivery Approach |
The principal work of this
course will be done using online resources accessed remotely from your home
computer. You may select the campus where you would like to obtain and review
catalogued items and establish contact with the Course Instructor assigned to LBR105
students. Although you could do most of the assignments at any of the
campuses, it would be to your advantage to use the same library throughout, because you
will become acquainted with the staff and will be able to work consistently with the same
Course Instructor. |
Instructor Role |
One of the
Reference Librarians at the campus of your choice will be your Course
Instructor. He or she may be one of the people who helped design
this course. Your instructor will assist you with the research
strategies and will help you prepare your assignments as needed. |
Schedule |
The course may be completed
in a short time period of just five weeks, but it must be completed within the ELI
enrollment guidelines. |
