Module Two: Encoding and Decoding Messages

In our first module, we looked at the process of communication. For this module, we will examine how we present and receive messages. We will use Chapters Four, Five and Six for this module.

Recall from Chapter One the definition of encoding as the process in which a source expresses thoughts and feelings in verbal and nonverbal symbols. In this module we will explore how that occurs with special reference to understanding how verbal and nonverbal codes are rule-governed. We will also give greater focus to the concept of decoding with special consideration to how we listen.

What are the rules that govern the use of language in your speech community? How does the role that enact influence how you use language?
How do we use vocabularies of nonverbal communication? How does your culture affect the way you encode and decode nonverbal communications?
Become a better listener by examining the stages of listening. Check out some concrete ideas for listening improvement with the CARESS model of listening.
