What To Study for Exam #1 :

In the TEXT introductions, the editors provide a very thorough background to your readings. In particular, you should study these topics for Exam #1.

•  important dates of English settlement, pp.7-8

•  the slave trade, pp. 11-13

•  the writing of Jamestown colonists, pp. 222-224

Be sure to give attention to the writing of another settler, Richard Frethorne , a young indentured servant who came to the plantation called Martin's Hundred shortly after the massacre of Jamestown settlers in 1622. These few letters provide a chilling record of what life was like for the indentured laborer in early Virginia . Note the details of Frethorne's complaints about disease, hunger, the threat of Indians, lack of daily comforts and simple freedoms, and homesickness. He appeals to his parents' pity, guilt, and love; do you think it is likely they responded to have him returned?
