An enzyme that normally is active when the pH is between 7 and 8 is treated with a strong acid. Explain the likely effect of such a treatment. Enzymes are protein molecules. Most proteins are denatured when exposed to a strong acid or base. Thus, one would predict that a protein that normally functions between pH7 and pH8 would be denatured by a strong acid. If the enzyme were denatured it would no longer be biologically active, i.e., it would no longer be able to catalyze the biochemical reaction associated with the enzyme. |
