The following equation (G stands for glucose) G + G + G
---------> G-G-G + 2H2O, is an example of Note that in dehydration synthesis, a larger molecule is formed from smaller molecules - synthesis means to build. Also, note that TWO water molecules are formed (not three). A water molecule is produced at each bond site that links the monomers. Dehydration synthesis is the biochemical process used to build all the macromolecules from their monomers. Turn to page 2-29 and look at the chemical equation for forming a dipeptide from two amino acids. The process by which the dipeptide is formed is dehydration synthesis and the covalent bond linking the two amino acids is called a dipeptide bond. Note that in the example on page 2-29, one water molecule is produced. If four amino acids had joined together, three water molecules would have been produced. |
