13.  Which of the following structures would be found in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells?

    a.  nucleus     b.  cell membrane    c.  ribosomes     d.  both (a) and (b)    e.  both (b) and (c)

(a) No.  Prokaryotic cells lack membrane bound organelles.  Although prokaryotic cells have genetic material, they lack a membrane that separates this material from the rest of the cell.  Thus, prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus.

(b) Yes. All cells have a cell membrane.

(c) Yes. Ribosomes, the site of protein synthesis, are not membrane bound organelles.  Ribosomes are composed of protein and RNA, a type of nucleic acid.

Thus, the correct answer is (e).
