17.  glycolysis.  This is the first phase of cellular respiration.   In the reactions in this phase, glucose begins to be oxidized generating 2 ATP molecules.  The hydrogens that are removed from glucose are carried by two molecules of NADH + H⁺ and the glucose molecule is split in half to yield two molecules of pyruvate.  Does this process require oxygen?
