17.  glycolysis.  This is the first phase of cellular respiration.   In the reactions in this phase, glucose begins to be oxidized generating 2 ATP molecules.  The hydrogens that are removed from glucose are carried by two molecules of NADH + H+ and the glucose molecule is split in half to yield two molecules of pyruvate.  Does this process require oxygen? Write an equation for this reaction and check your answer with the equation on page 4-9 in your Study Guide.
